Du 18 au 20 février, l'équipe de CoCreate Humanity - Hélène Ros (cofondatrice), Géna Benavente (stagiaire de CoCreate Humanity et étudiante en troisième année de psychologie), et Denis Ricca (membre du Comité de l'association) - ont pris la route en direction de Bâle, en Suisse, pour aller à la rencontre d'un personnage incroyable, un travailleur humanitaire à la retraite : Jean Nordmann.
Ce fut un très beau moment de partage où nous avons échangé sur nos parcours de vie, nos expériences drôles et moins drôles, un moment figé dans le temps des souvenirs et des discussions sur l'avenir...
From 18 to 20 February, CoCreate Humanity team - Hélène Ros (co-founder), Géna Benavente (CoCreate Humanity intern and third year psychology student), and Denis Ricca (CCH Board member) - went to Basel, Switzerland, to meet an incredible person, a retired humanitarian worker: Jean Nordmann.
It was a beautiful moment of sharing where we exchanged on our life paths, our funny and not so funny experiences, a moment frozen in time of memories and discussions on the future...

Jean est une personne discrète et il n'est pas facile de "retracer" sa carrière sur la base d'internet et des réseaux sociaux.
C'est la publication de son livre de photographie "Beauty in Bitterness" qui nous a permis de découvrir sa biographie.
Source Alexandra Stäheli : "Après une carrière en neurobiologie, Jean Nordmann décide de quitter son institut de recherche à l'âge de 44 ans pour se consacrer à l'humanitaire. Pendant plus de 20 ans, il a travaillé comme délégué et chef de mission pour le Comité international de la Croix-Rouge (CICR), l'ONU et diverses organisations non gouvernementales, en poste dans de nombreux pays d'Afrique (République de Guinée, Congo, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritanie, Somalie, Soudan, Tchad, République centrafricaine), en Papouasie (Papouasie occidentale, Indonésie), en Afghanistan et en ex-Yougoslavie. Un Nikon Coolpix 4500 l'accompagnait dans ses missions. Nordmann l'a utilisé pour faire le portrait de ses plus proches collègues et des gens qui l'entouraient, capturant leur quotidien apparemment banal, qui, après un second regard - ainsi que les commentaires du photographe dans l'exposition - révèle une folie très normale comme des situations extrêmes réglementées. Une fois le contexte connu, la photographie de deux enfants en tenue d'été, bras dessus, bras dessous, se promenant dans les rues, prend un nouveau sens : le fait que les deux enfants se soient paisiblement assurés un morceau de vie insouciante, qu'aucun d'entre eux n'a consciemment connu auparavant, au milieu d'un raid aérien dans une ville de l'ex-Yougoslavie, n'est pas visible sur l'image ; cependant, une ambivalence de pouvoir et de fragilité se déploie dans la tension entre l'image et le texte, que l'on retrouve dans une grande partie du travail de Nordmann. Les photographies exigent donc une sorte de lecture lente ; elles doivent être comprises comme une narration visuellement comprimée, qui doit être libérée de ses contraintes par les mots.
L'exposition "Beauty in Bitterness" souhaite mettre l'accent sur ce phénomène de Janus, ces moments de légèreté dans le désespoir, que Nordmann n'a cessé de rencontrer au cours de ses missions et qui constituent le point commun de toutes les situations, ethnies et pays représentés : le silence au milieu de tous les désespoirs d'où peut surgir un courage renouvelé ; la simplicité de la chance, qui peut planer comme une poussière sur l'aspect le plus lourd des choses - en bref, les moments de beauté qui scintillent dans toute l'amertume de la guerre et ses contradictions".
Jean is a discreet person and it is not easy to "trace" her career on the basis of the internet and social networks.
It was the publication of her photography book "Beauty in Bitterness" that allowed us to discover her biography.
Source from Alexandra Stäheli: "After a career in neurobiology Jean Nordmann decided to leave his research institute at the age of 44 and devote himself to humanitarian work. For more than 20 years he worked as a delegate and head of mission for the International Commitee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the UNO and various nongovernment organizations, stationed in many African countries (Republic of Guinea, Congo, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Somalia, Sudan, Chad, Central African Republic), in Papua (Papua, West Papua, Indonesia), Afghanistan und Ex-Yugoslavia. A Nikon Coolpix 4500 accompanied him on his missions, which Nordmann used to portray his closest colleagues and the people around him, capturing their seemingly unspectacular everyday life, which after taking a second glance- along with the photographer’s comments in the exhibition- reveal very normal madness as regulated extreme situations. With contextual knowledge the photograph of two summery-clothed children linked arm-in-arm, strolling through the streets takes on a new meaning: that the two children have peacefully secured a piece of carefree life, which neither of them have consciously experienced before, in the midst of an air raid in an Ex-Yugoslavian city cannot be seen in the picture; however an ambivalence of power and fragility unfolds in the tension between picture and text, which can be found in much of Nordmann’s work. Therefore the photography demands a kind of slow reading; they are to be understood as a visually compressed narrative, which must be released from its constraints with words.
The exhibition «Beauty in Bitterness» would like to focus on this Janus-faced phenomenon, these moments of light heartedness in times of despair, which Nordmann came across again and again on his missions and which is the common bond in all the various situations, ethnic groups and countries portrayed: the silence amidst all hopelessness from which renewed courage can arise; the simplicity of luck, which can hover like dust on the heaviest appearance of things- in short, the twinkling moments of beauty within all the bitterness of war and its contradictions".

Aujourd'hui à la retraite à Bâle, nous retrouvons Jean dans la Belle Maison, un lieu où il accueille toutes les personnes qui souhaitent visiter cette jolie ville suisse allemande. Sa maison comporte plusieurs chambres pouvant être louées via Airbnb ou en le contactant directement.
L'argent des locations est entièrement reversé à différents bénéficiaires :
1- Construction et soutien d'une école pour orphelins du SIDA dans la brousse de la République Centrafricaine
2- Soutien des études d'un ancien élève de l'Ecole Africa à Bangui
3- Aide pour Little Angel, fillette handicapée (traitements médicaux etc.) à Nairobi au Kenya
4- Études universitaires d'Anja, fille d'une ancienne collègue de Jean pendant la guerre en ex-Yougoslavie (Mostar, Bosnie-Herzégovine et Zagreb, Croatie)
5- Études secondaires et universitaires d'Ania et de Karol (Oswiezim et Cracovie, Pologne)
6- Achat tous les 24 mois d'une prothèse pour un garçon ayant perdu une jambe dans le Nord du Cameroun
7- Soutien à Sadi, camp de réfugiés en Tanzanie
8- Soutien à Gloria and Benidel dont les parents ont dû fuir leur pays (Kinshasa, République Démocratique du Congo)
Now retired in Basel, we find Jean in La Belle Maison, a place where he welcomes all those who wish to visit this beautiful Swiss German city. His house has several rooms that can be rented via Airbnb or by contacting him directly.
The money from the rentals is entirely donated to different beneficiaries:
1- Construction and support of a school for AIDS orphans in the bush of the Central African Republic
2- Support for the studies of a former student of Ecole Africa in Bangui
3- Help for Little Angel, a disabled girl (medical treatment etc.) in Nairobi, Kenya
4- University studies of Anja, daughter of a former colleague of Jean during the war in ex-Yugoslavia (Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Zagreb, Croatia)
5- Secondary and university studies of Ania and Karol (Oswiezim and Krakow, Poland)
6- Purchase of a prosthesis every 24 months for a boy who lost a leg in northern Cameroon
7- Support to Sadi, a refugee camp in Tanzania
8- Support to Gloria and Benidel whose parents had to flee their country (Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo)
